Carleton University plans to award Aung San Suu Kyi, the Burmese pro-democracy leader and Nobel laureate, with an honorary degree in a ceremony next week.

In announcing the conferral of a Doctor of Laws in absentia, Carleton University is following the federal government in honouring Suu Kyi.

In December, Prime Minister Stephen Harper invited her to visit Canada and claim the honorary citizenship awarded to her in 2007.

Carleton's ceremony will take place at noon on Tuesday in the Kailash Mitai Theatre on campus. Former Progressive Conservative cabinet minister Flora Mac-Donald will also deliver an address.
